The light commercial vehicle got unveiled in Europe more than a year ago, as the 2024 Transit Custom is the first new-generation version of the van since its debut in 2012 and it just won the 2024 International Van Of The Year award.

History

The Ford Transit - light commercial vehicles manufactured by the Ford Motor Company since 1965, primarily as a cargo van, also as a large passenger van. The vehicle is also known as the Ford T-Series (T-150, T-250, T-350), a nomenclature shared with Ford's other light commercial vehicles, the Ford F-Series trucks, and the Ford E-Series chassis.

As of 2015, 8 million Transit vans have been sold, making it the third best-selling van of all time. Upon its introduction in North America, the Transit quickly became the best-selling van of any type in the United States, minivan sales included. Transit has also achieved success in Europe, where it has been the best-selling light commercial vehicle for forty years, and in some countries the term "Transit" has passed into common usage as a generic trademark applying to any light commercial van in the Transit's size bracket.

Predecessor

  • Europe: Ford Thames 400E

  • North America: Ford E-Series

Successor

  • Ford Transit Custom (for Ford Tourneo)

Ford Transit Custom competes against the Mercedes-Benz Vito/Viano, Peugeot Expert, Renault Trafic and Volkswagen Transporter, the Custom is offered in two body lengths and two roof heights. For 2018 production, the model line received an exterior update, distinguished by a new grille (in line with the larger Transit); the interior received a new dashboard (styled in line with the Fiesta).

The 2024 Ford Transit Custom Model range trimmed to two variants, with new technology and larger load space, no changes to turbo-diesel engine as it's powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, producing 125kW and 390 Nm on an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Unveiled in Europe more than a year ago, the 2024 Transit Custom is the first new-generation version of the van since its debut in 2012, launching first with diesel power before an electric battery-powered variant arrives down the track. Available in both short- and long-wheelbase form (SWB and LWB).

An all-new platform with independent rear suspension has resulted in a significant increase to the Transit Custom’s load length, rising from 2554mm to 3050mm for the SWB and 2921mm to 3450mm in LWB guise – resulting in total storage space of 5.8 and 6.8 cubic meters respectively (up from 5.7 and 6.6). While payload capacity has dropped to 1269 kg (SWB) and 1223kg (LWB) – down from the previous model’s 1353 kg (SWB) and 1291 kg (LWB) figures – braked towing capacity has increased to 2500 kg for both body styles.

Transit Custom buyers get a Frozen White paint color at no-cost, while it costs to have one of the 61 available paint colors including the 58 ‘SVO Paint’ offerings. A roof-mounted passenger airbag improves passenger safety features, there's also a pre-collision assist, rear cross-traffic alert and electric parking brake; the exit warning reduces the risk of hitting a pedestrian or cyclist while opening doors.

Still on features, in some countries Ford has apparently confirmed the Transit Custom will not launch with a unique feature which allows the steering wheel to be tilted flat to create a table or work space when the car is stopped.

But New technology inside the van’s cabin includes a 12-inch partial digital dash, Ford’s ‘Sync 4’ infotainment system – complete with a 13-inch touchscreen – which includes satellite navigation, wireless and wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and an onboard 5G modem.

Review on the Ford Transit Van by autocar.co.uk

"New independent rear suspension has settled the rear of the Custom, virtually eliminating any bounce when we tested it with around half of our test van's maximum 1275 kg payload.

The steering feels faster, more precise and slightly lighter, which are all positive changes, particularly for a van, where you might expect driving dynamics to be secondary. The ride is firm but well damped, adding to the Custom’s comfort, and a noticeable lack of road or wind noise bodes well for the EV version.

The updated Ford Transit Custom gains numerous new features, from intelligent speed-limit assistance through to Delivery Assist, a system designed to speed up deliveries by automating actions like switching on the hazard lights, closing the windows and locking the doors when the driver leaves the van.

However, its carrying-capacity practicality is still its greatest strength. With load volumes from 5.8m3 to 6.8m3, maximum payloads of up to 1350kg, a 2.8-tonne towing capacity and the option of four-wheel-drive, the Custom has improved its fundamentals as well as adding to it with new features."

The redesigned Ford Transit Custom has thus far racked up a number of accolades following its debut in van-hungry Europe, a list that most recently includes winning Best Medium Van and Best Commercial Vehicle from the UK publication Parkers. However, the new van looks primed to continue that hot streak after adding yet another award to its ever-growing list of them – this time, 2024 International Van of the Year (IVOTY). These awards are determined by a panel of 24 judges who are commercial vehicle journalists, all of whom are based out of either Europe or South Africa.
