When it comes to Ferrari several models are known for holding their resale value, these include the Ferrari 250 GTO, F40, 812 GTS, 296 GTB, and Purosangue; they often appreciate over time. The Ferrari Roma and its Spider version also tend to retain their value strongly.


Cars with special editions, custom features, or unique technology can command higher prices. Particularly those from the Formula 1 era, are highly sought after. If a Ferrari was owned by a well-known personality, it could add to its collectable and value. Cars in excellent condition with low mileage are more likely to maintain or increase their value.


The classic Ferrari 250 GTO it's highly sought after, known for its unique designs and performance, a valuable asset to for collectors as it auctioned at higher prices. The latest and most valuable Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis number 3765, is a 1962 model that was sold at auction for just under R1 billion (around $51.7 million). It's the only factory-owned 250 GTO of the Series 1 and was the only one raced by Scuderia Ferrari. This particular GTO is also unique because it was the only one ever factory-fitted with a 4.0-liter V12 engine, though it was later swapped for a 3.0-liter V12 and five-speed gearbox. Appearing in the Nürburgring 1000 KM and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car spent 38 years in the care of one collector, further enhancing its value and rarity.


It's been found difficult to definitively say which specific Ferrari models will appreciate most in the future, but models like the 296 GTB and 296 GTS as currently highly sought after. But there has to be one to write about, the Ferrari 296 GTB for its hybrid powertrain and desirable features, is also holding its value well, and in some cases even increasing in value on the used market.


The Ferrari 296 GTB, a mid-engine two-seater sports berlinetta, is the latest evolution of Ferrari's iconic design, incorporating a revolutionary 120° V6 engine and a plug-in hybrid electric system. A sports car built since 2022, it offers a blend of high performance, innovative technology, and striking design, redefining the fun-to-drive experience. The 296 GTB features a sleek, minimalist design with clean lines and a truncated tail inspired by the 1963 250 LM.

The Ferrari 296 GTB is a highly advanced and stylish sports car that combines cutting-edge technology with a classic Ferrari driving experience.


The 2023 Ferrari 296 GTB's appreciation is driven by several factors, including that it's Ferrari's first V6 production car, offering a revolutionary experience with its plug-in hybrid system, compact dimensions, innovative dynamic control systems, its unique V6 engine features a 663 horsepower with an electric motor, sporty design, and Ferrari's brand heritage. The new ABS control module and SMC-FRS dampers, enhance its agility and responsiveness. The plug-in hybrid system offers a usable car experience with zero pedal response times and a 25km range in all-electric eDrive mode. The 296 GTB is also comfortable, allowing for long journeys without turning them into a chore; with a short wheelbase, revamped brakes, and attention to weight reduction. The 296 GTB is faster around a track than the flagship SF90, further highlighting its performance capabilities.


In 2023 prices of Ferrari 296 GTB in South Africa were from R6,804,000 to R8,499,000. Used models, like those sold by Pharoah Auto Investment and Scuderia South Africa, were priced around R7,895,000 and R8,495,000, respectively. A specific 2023 296 GTB with 285 km was listed for R8,499,000 at Pharoah Auto. There were other Ferrari models listed, including a collector car for R1,799,000. Scuderia South Africa: Lists used 296 GTBs in Cape Town and Durban, with prices around R7,795,000 and R7,800,000, respectively. Fouche Sandton: Offers a 2023 296 GTB with 3,400 km for R7,999,995. The Ferrari 296 GTB, a 2023 model, is listed for between R7,595,000 and R8,499,000 in South Africa.


Then there's the latest or the 2026 Ferrari 296 Speciale, a track-focused, high-performance version of the 296 GTB, a V6 supercar. Designed to be even more engaging and fun to drive, offering increased power, implemented weight-saving measures to enhance, and enhanced aerodynamics. The 296 Speciale is a plug-in hybrid with a combined output of 880 cv (868 hp). A new rear spoiler and active wings generate significantly more downforce than the GTB.


Variants

  • Assetto Fiorano: The Assetto Fiorano is the track-oriented kit available for the 296 GTB, which includes an upgraded suspension, carbon fiber bodywork, and a polycarbonate rear window screen.

  • GTS: The 296 GTS is an open-top variant of the 296 GTB with a folding hardtop.

  • Speciale: The 296 Speciale is a high-performance version of the 296, announced in April 2025.


To promote the launch of the 296 GTB, Ferrari collaborated with Epic Games in July 2021 to add the Ferrari 296 GTB as a drivable vehicle to the online battle royale video game Fortnite Battle Royale, as part of Chapter 2: Season 7 of the game. The 296 GTB was removed from the game after the end of the season in October 2021.


Why does Ferrari plan to release an Evo version of the 296 GT3 in 2026? The Ferrari 296 GT3 competes in motor sports, starting with Frikadelli Racing who won the 2023 24 Hours of Nürburgring, with 162 laps setting a new distance record; then recently at the 2025 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, Ferrari taking overall victory with the No.51 Ferrari 499P in the Hypercar class, a record win with 11 overall wins, and the LMGT3 class victory with the No.21 Ferrari 296 GT3.



Ferrari cars can appreciate in value due to several factors, including limited production numbers, racing heritage, historical importance, and the brand's exclusivity. Additionally, models with low mileage and minimal wear, unique features, and even celebrity ownership can contribute to a car's appreciation. It's rare Ferraris can be a limted by market volatility and inflation, as their value is less tied to traditional financial markets. Unlike financial assets, rare Ferraris are physical, tangible investments with intrinsic value, tied to their condition, history, and rarity.
