In 2024 - the spacious Polo tightens the seatbelts

With auto-dimming rear-view mirror, as rain-sensing wipers are standard on the Polo Life with an automatic emergency braking and you can also be helped by a pedestrian and cyclist detection but Polo Life retains what Clinca hates the most, the cloth upholstery.

The Volkswagen Polo 2024, regains blind-spot assist, rear cross-traffic alert; a five-star Euro NCAP rating, with proactive occupant protection resulting in an adult occupant protection score of 96 per cent, a child occupant protection score of 85 per cent, a pedestrian protection score of 76 per cent, and a safety assist score of 59 per cent. As it tightens the seatbelts, closes the windows, and shuts the sunroof if it detects an imminent collision – as standard; with a steering wheel in the range-topping Polo GTI - fiddly capacitive buttons on the current steering wheel being replaced with physical buttons.

The 2024 Volkswagen Polo range comes standard with the following safety equipment:

• Front, front-side, center, and curtain airbags

• Autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection

• Lane-keep assist

• Reversing camera

• Driver fatigue detection

• Front and rear parking sensors

Adaptive cruise control and Travel Assist are part of an options package on the base Polo Life, and standard on the Style and GTI.

The Style and GTI also include:

• Blind-spot monitoring

• Rear cross-traffic alert

But before moving right along, there are some Polo GTI's that seem exciting, like the adaptive suspension, Kings Red or Deep Iron Grey dashboard inlays, Red brake calipers, 18-inch alloy wheels, Dual chrome exhaust tips and the GTI badging; just to make you look expensive.

The LED Headlights that come as standard will cost more to replace than conventional bulbs. Hoping they're screwed up properly as Polo's crime trend in South Africa it's the headlights. Maybe the all-round system that can record any suspicions around the vehicle might help.

Drivetrains

Polo Life and Style feature a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder TSI engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, making 85kW of power and 200 Nm of torque; consuming 5.4 liters per 100km on the combined cycle. The Polo GTI is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission producing 147kW and 320 Nm; using a claimed 6.5 liters per 100km.

Servicing and Warranty

The 2024 Volkswagen Polo is covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty. Logbook servicing is required every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first. The first five services for the 1.0L TSI engine are worth between R8,380,32 to R19,111. Whereas the first 5 services on the Polo GTI are covered by between R9,176,64 to R30,298,08.

When it comes to design or structure, I still see no difference, but apparently there's a new LED strip on the front, new front and rear bumpers, and a few added creases here and there to sharpen it’s look. It is surprisingly spacious, comfortable and; back seat passengers have both enough head and legroom The Luggage space is very competitive too, at 351 liters. The Volkswagen Polo has an almost flat load bay – easy to slide heavy boxes right up behind the front seats.

It doesn't jostle you over lumps and bumps and it’s quiet and surprisingly relaxing on the motorway. It’s accurate, lightweight steering makes it easy to drive around town too – but don’t expect it to feel as fun on a twisty road. Even with larger alloy wheels, you won’t be shaken too much by potholes and it doesn’t lean excessively in tight corners either. Muted wind and tyre noise on the freeway.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring features are standard across the range. These let you use a variety of your phone’s apps (including navigation and music streaming) through the car’s built-in display.
